On May 11, 2023, the Public Health Emergency (PHE) for COVID-19 officially ending. The PHE was declared in January 2020 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and has been extended several times since then. With the end of the PHE, there will be changes to COVID-19 testing and related services.
What is the Public Health Emergency for COVID-19?
The PHE for COVID-19 allowed for expanded access to testing, treatment, and other services related to the pandemic. It also allowed for changes in regulations and funding to support these efforts. With the end of the PHE, some of these changes will be scaled back or eliminated.
How Will the End of the PHE Affect COVID Testing?
One significant change is the end of free COVID-19 testing for individuals without insurance or who are underinsured. The federal government has been providing free PCR testing to these individuals during the PHE, but this service will no longer be available after May 11, 2023.
