Duties and responsibilities:
- Utilize fundamentals of microbial testing.
- Participates in specimen testing according to established procedures.
- Perform positive patient identification on samples or in reporting systems.
- Assists in the preparation and storage of reagents.
- Perform automated sample extraction from various specimen types by following the laboratory SOP.
- Documents all activities as necessary, including preventive maintenance logs, instrument checks, troubleshooting, and quality control procedures to ensure company compliance.
- Perform preventative maintenance on equipment, document it, make minor repairs, and immediately contact appropriate personnel for problems that require complex repairs.
- Pipetting samples and reagents using calibrated and approved automatic dispensers.
- Communicate and consult the clinical laboratory scientist for technical decisions concerning testing, as necessary.
- Request and pull samples pending tests by locating, sorting, and preparing samples for testing.
- Ensures that the laboratory has enough supplies to continue operating by doing daily monitoring of supplies and reagents.
- Guaranteeing that all received specimens are labeled appropriately and that they match the labels on the requisition to ensure no issues with patient identification and reporting
- Understanding of all tests offered by the laboratory as well as all specimen requirements, collection, handling, transportation, and storage conditions.
- Doing Order Entry if needed through our LIS system, following all procedures to enter data correctly, editing data, and/or verifying data entered in the LIS.
- Storing specimens before and after testing.
- Discarding specimens according to SOP and as instructed by the Lab Manager or Lab Supervisor.
- Do temperature checks and recording for refrigerators, freezers, and room temperature.
- Cleans work area, and surrounding laboratory after completion of the workday.
- Complying with laws and regulations, and company procedures and policies.
- Communication effectively with the Laboratory Manager and/or laboratory staff.
- Completing adjacent tasks as needed to support the laboratory objectives.
Qualifications and education requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related life science.
- 1+ years previous experience in a clinical laboratory or related work environment preferred.
- Previous experience and knowledge of Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Familiarity with CLIA and CAP regulatory requirements.
- Conduct activities in compliance with CLIA and other regulatory guidelines.
- Identify and report unsafe equipment, conditions, and practices so that they may be corrected prior to an incident.
Physical demands and environmental
- Must be able to sit/stand for extended periods of time in a laboratory environment.
- Must be able to work with clinical and environmental samples, including, but not limited to blood, urine, etc.
- Utilization of fingers and hands
- Required to sit, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
- Occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
Work environment:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, sharps, blood, and bodily fluids.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
